Ahh. Martingales. The 'it' or 'I need' collar of the dog world. Or, maybe not.

I was recently at our local SPCA and found a magnificent little  article about martingales in general. Mainly about sizing and use.

Here's what I found:

  1. Sizing is critical. Make sure it is adjusted correctly (the sides aren't to touch when loop is pulled - it would defeat the purpose). About a thumb width between is correct (3-5cm).
  2. It is used for WALKING AND TRAINING. NEVER unsupervised!!!! NEVER.
  3. If you want a tag collar, use a tag collar. Martingales are TRAINING collars.
  4. They were designed for dogs that have a smaller head than neck, so the collar doesn't slip off when walking (or training) but many dogs now benifit from them.
